Modes: On device · Auto · Your key

The model sheet has one control that matters: the mode. It decides where a chat is answered.

On device

The model you picked runs in your browser (or the desktop’s native engine). Your code and prompts never leave the machine, it works offline once the model is downloaded, and it is the default everywhere.

Auto

Runs on this device, routing hard tasks to the strongest local model you have. When a run fails — writes no file, or writes one the checks still reject — OIOXO offers your key. Never a silent switch: it asks once per session, never suggests something that needs downloading, and never re-sends your request on its own, because the same ask on a key costs real money.

Your key

Every message goes to the key you chose. The row shows the price per million tokens and the header shows the running cost of the chat. Your key talks straight to the provider; see Your own keys.

Which is the default?

On device. A key is a choice, never the default — even when one is configured. If no on-device model fits (Safari, iOS), the sheet says so and offers Your key.

Ask or Agent

Independent of the mode, the composer has an Ask / Agent toggle. Ask answers in the chat and touches nothing. Agent may read and write files, with consent before every write. There is no separate “ask” model.
